Review: Horrible Science Violent Volcano Kit from Hobby Craft

A few weeks ago Hobby Craft sent us a Horrible Science Violent Volcano Kit £6 to test out. Today was the first day of the half term and wet so it was the perfect time to try it out.

The kit contains a plastic volcano model, bicarbonate of soda, vinegar, goggles and mini card stand ups.

You are encouraged to build a village scene around the Volcano with soil and twigs but it was too wet to go out so we just did it in a tray with the card stand ups but next time we do it we will do it properly.

It’s easy to create. You screw off the top of the volcano add the vinegar and add the bicarb before quickly screwing the top back on. I wasn’t so fast as you can see.

Volcano

BG was very impressed with the ‘explosion’. I would have liked the Volcano top to be a little bigger as it was tricky to get the bircarb in without it spilling. However it was a nice way to spend 15 minutes. The Volcano is reusable so next time we make a big scene around it.

The kit also comes with facts about volcano’s which BG found interesting.

A nice little kit would make a good present.

Hobby Craft have a great selection of craft products and kits and some great Halloween crafts bits.

The Big Reveal

I and 11 other bloggers were recently sent a Sonny Angel Doll. If you don’t know what a Sonny Angel Doll is it’s a small collectable doll and they are available in different collections such as animals and vegetables.

The exciting thing about Sonny Angel dolls is that you buy them blind; you don’t know which one you are going to get it’s a big surprise. Sometimes there is a limited edition one and collectors go crazy for them.

I was sent one from the new flower range by Asobi Toys and we all opened our dolls at the same time on twitter. I got…..

Sonny Angel Flower Series Catcus

Catcus!

It is really cute and now sits on my window sill in my office. BG keeps trying to steal it from me!

Sonny Angel Dolls are available from Kind Toys and if you want to see what the others got check out the #thebigreveal on twitter.

Toy Review: Chad Valley Large Baby Playmat

I was on the lookout for a large playmat for Little Miss. We have some lovely little ones which are great for taking out with us and were perfect when she didn’t move but now she is rolling and crawling we needed something larger. So when Argos contacted me and asked me if I want to review something from the Chad Valley Baby range I knew straight away their Large Baby Playmat (£29.99) was the one for me.

Chad Valley Large Baby Playmat

The playmat is a really good size, big enough for two children to play on. It’s really bright and has a mirror, plastic teething rings, a butterfly and different sounds. It’s also padded.

Little Miss automatically went for the teething rings! She likes rolling around the playmat and playing with the different elements.

Chad Valley Large Baby Playmat Argos

The playmat is just the right size for our living room and folds up small and goes into the toy box for an easy tidy up.

If you are looking for a large baby playmat that this is a great choice. At £29.99 it’s not going to completely break the bank and you will get a lot of use out of it.

The Chad Valley Large Baby Playmat is currently half price £14.99 which is a bargain! Would make a great new baby gift or put aside for Christmas.

Argos have a great selection of Chad Valley Baby products.

Baby Products We Are Loving This Month {August}

It’s amazing how much stuff babies seem to have. OK so they probably don’t need it all but sometimes I can’t help myself. I thought going forward I would share the products we are loving each month. Some have been sent to us and others we have bought ourselves ( bloggers do actually buy things).

So here is what we are loving this month:

Little Miss is being baby led weaned which is so much easier than the purees we did with BG. One of the upsides is you need very little to actually do it. However there are a few items that make life a little easier.

Bibs! BLW is very, very messy. As the weather is warm I often strip her down but there are times a bib comes in handy. My favourite are the wipe down bibs, cloth bibs just get stained. We were sent a Jake Giraffe  Bibsili £6.99 from www.piccolobambino.co.uk to try out.

Little Miss has a fascination with Giraffes so it was a big hit with her straight away.  There are several  features I like about this:

  • It’s easy to clean. It even goes in the dishwasher
  • The crumb catcher. Little has already worked out how to get food out if it.
  • The adjustable neck, there are three different notches on it

These bibs are must when weaning. They come in different designs.

Another must is the MAM Dipper Set. It’s a spoon and fork set which has a little shield on it to stop them sticking it too far down their throats. This means Little Miss can feed herself yogurt and porridge.  She mastered using it very quickly and gets very excited when she sees it coming out of the draw.

MAM also sent me a feeding bowl which is spilt in two sections and comes with a lid handy for at home and for taking food about.  We also received some teething products which came just in time.

The Bite and Relax Phase Two is great for gnashing on, it has 4 different surfaces and just right for little hands. It comes with its own transportation box which can be used for sterilising.

The Mini Coolers are also a great product, just pop them in the fridge and then let your baby go at them. I love that it comes with a little strap and clip perfect for on the go.

Teething powders are a must in this house. I mainly used Aston and Parsons when BG was teething but they are very hard to get hold of now so I use Nelson Teetha powders and they work really well.  I find they calm Little Miss down and she is a happier baby. I have also been using them with BG who is having problems with her teeth and had an abscess recently and they helped her as well. I buy mine at Boots but they are available in most chemist and supermarkets.

Product Details

Solar Eclipse Sunshade from Diono £13.99 . I must for any trip in the car that pesky sun gets in Little Miss’s eyes. It has two layers one is a total blackout for extra sunny days and then you can just have to bottom layer which lets a little light through.

I was sent some Baby Eye Care wipes from TLC to try out. Little Miss gets a little bit of hay fever when the grass is cut and I found these wipes really gentle and helped soothed her eyes when we were out and about. I have also been using them as I have had really sore and watering eyes this year and they have been a life saver when out. The wipes sooth but stop my eyes drying out and getting sore which happens when I keep wiping them.

I like that they come individually wrapped you can pop a few in your bag.

The biggest hit at the moment is Little Miss’s Fisher Price Jumperoo. BG was bought a trampoline so I decided Little Miss needed something, so a few months ago I bought one from Sainsbury’s.  She liked being in there but wasn’t overly excited but in the last month it’s been the source of a lot of giggles.  She loves jumping around and worked out how to spin it and loves to play with the different toys.  I am really glad we invested in it. It can be adjusted to three heights and she is on the lowest at the moment so she has room to grow.

What are you loving this month?

Toy Review: Costcutters UK

The people at Costcutters UK asked me if we could test out some toys for them and who am I to say no?

To be honest before they contacted me I had never heard of them. Costcutters UK are a family run business based in the midlands. They supply toys and curriculum based resources to schools but they do sell to the public as well. I was given £30 to spend so decided to get both girls something.

This is what I choose:

Bigjigs Healthy Eating Dairy Set £17.99

We have quite a bit of Bigjigs wooden food and a table top cooker already so thought this would be a good addition. I prefer wooden food over plastic it last longer and looks so much nicer. This set come with 4 crated (perfect for storage) and about 20 pieces of food. For £17.99 this is great value as I tend to buy BG’s wooden food individually and I pay £1-£2 for each one.

BG was very excited when I gave her the new set and she immediately set up shop in the garden.

We had a lovely afternoon and it all packed up nicely into the crates afterwards. Next time I have promised we will play kitchens in the garden.

They sell a good range of Bigjigs wooden food at a really reasonable price. I will be buying future items for BG from here.

Lamaze Clutch Cube £7.25

This goes everywhere with us, Little Miss really loves it. It clips onto the pushchair so we don’t lose it! She really likes all the colours and patterns and has a good chew on the rings attached to it. It even has a mirror which she loves. Some bits make a crinkly sound.

Little Miss plays with this every day. I think at £7.25 its great value for money.

Costcutters UK is worth checking out for toys, crafts and furniture. I will be buying from them in the future!

Teething Help from Munchkin

We have hit teething in this house. Thankfully Little Miss doesn’t seem to be struggling as bad as BG did but she is still a bit grumpy. She wants to chew on things constantly including my finger which was fine until her first tooth came through and now she just bites me.

Munchkin kindly sent me Little Miss some of their teething range to chomp on.

She was sent:
